Director’s Note

A play set in our own county, England. A play that expresses Immigration in a new light, from the immigrant’s point of view in an unforgiving yet sometimes truthful way. The young woman comes to England in the hope of a new protected life. Unfortunately England is far from what the young woman dreamed it would be.

At first when the cast and I were choosing the play, I had a strong pull towards ‘The Bogus Woman’. On reading the script I realised how heavy-duty and cutting edge this piece could be for us. This play would be able to push my cast to their absolute limits as they comprehend how to play a vast amount of diverse characters. I also felt with this piece being performed correctly it could have an emotional, thought-provoking and lasting effect upon the audience.

Due to the play being a fairly contemporary piece, I have not had the indulgence of seeing how other directors have created ‘The Bogus Woman’.  Therefore we have started completely from scratch. The stage and setting is very minimalistic as I want the audience to concentrate solely on the actors, and the atmosphere they create on the stage. The play is raw and fresh, which I feel helped me to bring the performance forward into the present year of 2014.

Our theatre company Breaking Stories is fundamentally involved in taking stories from the news, and taking away the outer layer until we discover the raw truth embedded within it. I feel this play was very apt for what we stand for. The aim is to out the truth on immigration and help people to see that the stigma around immigration is perhaps not always correct. Immigration is an extremely controversial subject in which Breaking Stories want to be a part of.

Breaking Stories wish to invite you, the audience to enter the auditorium with an open mind into immigration. We wish you to look at it from a different light that you perhaps never have. Instead of sitting back and relaxing, think about what it is you are watching and listening to. We aim to give the voiceless a voice and this is your chance to hear.

Brand new Breaking stories Theatre Company offers you to watch our very first production ‘The Bogus Woman.’
